OKAIHAU - President Margaret MacMillan - nh.macmillan@xtra.co.nz

Okaihau Lions Club was chartered on 04/04/1974.

Sponsored by the Lions Club of Kaikohe, the inauguration was held at the THC Waitangi. Our first cub banner was designed in August of that year, and subsequently became a collector's item when a new banner was unveiled in 2003.

After stints at the Horeke, Ohaewai an Okaihau Hotels, we now meet at the Okaihau Hall.

In the 70's, we raised funds through selling scrap metal, principally from the now defunct railway, having wine and cheese evenings where Auckland artists and local bands kept us entertained and held White Elephant stalls.

Through the 80's and 90's, we raised funds by selling firewood, sheep manure and holding racehorse evenings. We have delivered free firewood to local senior citizens. We still sell sheep manure and have the racehorse equipment. More recently, we have incorporated an annual dance into our fundraising activities.

There were also many one off events in addition to the Lake Omapere half-marathon, which was subsequently handed to the Fire Brigade in the 80's.

Over the years we have supported the local youth, youth groups, local community projects, national appeals and senior citizens.

We are proud of our Okaihau members who have gone on to higher office in Lions: District Governor, several Deputy District Governors and Zone Chairmen. But more importantly, we are proud of the unsung, those members who donate considerable time, effort and service for no reward.
