Parawai Lions is an all-women Lions Club that recently took part in the Relay for Life in Kapiti.

They succeeded in raising $3,250 towards Cancer Research which was a tremendous effort by all  involved.

Parawai Lions Jean Tolra (left) and Anna Upton have been awarded Lions Clubs International’s highest honour – the Melvin Jones Fellowship. The Waikanae women were astonished with the announcement, by District Governor Robyn Daniels at the club’s 20th anniversary dinner.

Mrs Daniels said the award is LCI’s acknowledgement, world-wide, of outstanding individuals and is the organisation’s highest form of recognition. The recipients are considered models of exemplary service to their club and community.

Mrs Tolra said she was absolutely overcome. “Our members do such a lot of good work and I am so pleased to be part of it, and this award is for them as well.”

The current club president, she has 23 years of service, said spokesman Joe Franklin. “She remains active in spite of recent ill health and is a key figure in the combined Kapiti Coast Lions Clubs’ book fair committee and in the sorting, packing and pricing operation.”

Mrs Upton was lost for words when she was called to receive her fellowship. She had 30 years of service and has been a Lioness president twice and Parawai Lions president three times, as well as a zone chairman, said Mr Franklin.

“Her community service is widely acknowledged and she has been previously recognised, as well as in Lions, with two Kapiti Coast District Community Service Awards for her services to Kapiti Carers, the church and Bereavement Support.”
