Is it a smile or a grimace. Dave Smith wires a poppy to the mine fence

This is partly what it is all about. Arthur Mather, Maurie Foulds, Dave Smith, Brian Atger

A good morning's work....

....and it arouses immediate interest for this famil group.

The final step. WWII veteran... prepares to unveil the commemoration plaque. Standing with him is Kevin Corney who masterminded the whole project. He had been inspired to do this when he was in Britain recently and saw the poppy display around the Tower of London.

Lions Senior Citizens' Concert

A small but appreciative audience turned up on Sunday afternoon for the annual Waihi Lions' Club Senior Citizens  Variety Concert. There was a change of venue this year from the Memorial Hall to the Waihi RSA clubrooms.

The entertainment was excellent and was provided by The Quarter Acre (Aka Alison Collings and Michael Thornton), Cathy and Wallace Dempster from Waihi Beach and the Mellowtones, that famous group of lady harmonisers whose members come from the greater Waihi area.

The musical delights ranged from popular music from the sixties and seventies, Glenn Miller classics such as “In the Mood” and the “Chattanooga Choo Choo, a native song from Botswana,  lilting Scottish ballads and a lovely melody which included Pokarekare Ana and Now is the Hour. The latter two songs brought spontaneous audience participation.

The catering staff of the RSA laid out tables to create a very attractive setting for the afternoon and resident chef, Ray, provided a magnificent afternoon tea for both the audience and the performers.

The audience size was down  on last year which was a little disappointing and members of the Lions' Club are already thinking of ways that they can get better publicity for next years event. The club would like to express its gratitude to the performers who gave their time freely and to the RSA who provided an ideal venue as well as the afternoon tea.

Waihi Lions on duty at Diabetes Testing. David Parish Reports.

On Easter Tuesday the McCosh Trust diabetes screening campervan was stationed outside Waihi New World. In the six hours that it was there one hundred and eight people took advantage of the free service offered and had their blood sugar levels and blood pressures checked. It was recommended to fourteen of these people that they should seek further advice from their own doctors.

The Trust, which is administered by husband and wife team, Christine and Michael Kemp, has screened just over 6000 “clients” in the three years since it began operating, 2,900 of these in the last year.

The Kemps are very grateful for the support they have received from both the Waihi and Waihi Beach Lion's clubs on the four occasions that they have come to the area.
