North Otago

Who are we?

  • We are a group of women living in Oamaru and its rural surroundings
  • We enjoy the fellowship of people interested in helping others.

What do we do?

  • We enjoy ourselves
  • We carry out ‘hands-on’ projects in our community and with other Lions Clubs.
  • We raise funds for, and give physical assistance to, charitable projects.
  • We organise community events to improve our sense of community.
  • We assist the blind, the elderly and our youth.
  • We assist in times of emergency.
  • We visit other clubs, have social outings.
  • Lions are proud of the fact that 100% of funds raised in the community are returned to the community.
  • Funds raised from the public are not used for administration purposes.  We do have some club based activities that raise funds for administration purposes and help reduce our costs.

What do we volunteer?

  • Our time, talents and enthusiasm:
  • We become involved on a committee to help organize the activities of the Club.
  • We work on projects as our home and work commitments allow.

When do we meet?

  • We meet on the 3rd Thursday of each month for a dinner meeting:
  • at The Manor Estate, 140 Perth Street, Oamaru
  • commencing at 6:30pm for friendship, a meal at 7pm followed by a guest speaker, then some general business, closing at about 9pm.
  • The board of directors meets once a month on the 1st Thursday for a business meeting, club members who are not on the board can attend this meeting if they wish.
  • 7:30pm at the Ara Institute, France Street, Oamaru
  • Committees meet for an hour or so at members’ homes as required to plan Club activities.
  • Monthly at 10:30am on the first Saturday for an informal social morning tea at various cafés
  • Several times each year we have social events at the movies, theatre, and in January when we do not have our formal dinner meeting we have a social gathering at a members home.

What does it cost?

  • Membership of most organisations has a cost.
  • Currently our annual dues are about the equivalent of a cup of coffee a week.
  • A $26 meal at each monthly Club dinner meeting attended.

What benefits do we receive?

  • The close friendship of club members and their families.
  • The satisfaction of assisting those less fortunate than yourself.
  • The satisfaction of being able to achieve service we could not achieve as individuals
  • Fun and enjoyment from meeting and working alongside like-minded people.
  • A range of low cost personal development opportunities.
  • As with any organisation, the friendships, satisfaction and personal development do depend on the amount we are prepared to be involved.
