DG Tony’s Thoughts.....

Shirley & I returned home on 11 July from the 101st International Convention in Las Vegas where we were amazed by the size of everything – 6,852 rooms in our hotel, the crowds, the huge meals, people at slot machines all times of the day, and of course the heat.   It was a wonderful experience, the Convention was extremely well run, I learned plenty and we made some great friends.

The first day the DGEs and partners had their photos taken with the incoming President Gudrun Yngvadottir and her husband from Iceland.  The following day after the Opening Ceremony we were entertained by Nadia Comaneci who was the first gymnast to receive the perfect score of 10 at an Olympic Games.  She gave us an interesting and thought provoking address.

We then broke into our classrooms from 10.45 through until 5.30 with a lunch break at 12.20.  Our group was fortunate in having PID Sheryl Jensen as our instructor.

The second day VP Gudrun gave her presentation.   I was most impressed with Gudrun and feel she will do a great job as our first woman President.  Her theme was a nautical one and they started by playing a song she’d had written for her year – Song for the Lions – which was played with a video background and Gudrun arrived on stage in a yacht.

Her aims are that Lions will serve the world and our local communities with pride, compassion and kindness.  But there’s also a world of service out there to be reached – Beyond the Horizon.

A proud moment on the last day when we took the oath of becoming a District Governor and our partners had the pleasure of taking our DGE ribbon off our badge.

My thanks to Cabinet Secretary Christine for her ongoing work preparing for the Presidents‘ Dinner.  My diary is looking very full with club visits where I am looking forward to meeting up with you all.
