DG Lorna’s Lines.....

Springtime has certainly seen clubs get busier with a wide variety of projects undertaken – sales of everything from bulbs to bio-fuel, garage sales to stalls, collections and raffles, events for fitness fanatics and those just wanting to enjoy our great outdoors.  These are all good opportunities to keep our Lions clubs in front of the public, raise some money and hopefully have a little fun as well.  Some projects require a lot of planning, organisation and manpower – please be mindful of the need to complete a Safety Action Plan for all projects.

The Methven Lions 50th celebration was a great night – two charter members received their 50 year chevrons - a magnificent achievement.  Those who attended the Lloyd Morgan lunch in Timaru enjoyed an informative talk on living alongside wild animals in a South African Game Park.

I was delighted to be at Rakaia Lions meeting when they officially handed over a cheque to their local Fire Brigade.  Members can feel very proud to have raised $51,000 (including a Lloyd Morgan grant) towards a new First Response vehicle.  Pleasant Point Lions have also completed fundraising towards a vehicle for a local family who have a special needs child.

I’ve been honoured to induct new members at a number of clubs I’ve visited this past month - new people bring fresh ideas, enthusiasm, and often introduce others.  SEVEN members joined Timaru Host recently – welcome.   (Look out Pleasant Point – they’re out to take the record from you!)

Planning is underway for our new Otago University club (using Dunedin North’s charter).  Lions will have a presence at ‘Clubs Day’ on 24th February.  There has been a couple of enquiries from overseas clubs who have young people coming to study at Otago next year so I’m reasonably optimistic.  If any of our members have children who are studying in Dunedin, please encourage them to join a “younger/newer look” University club.

Remember to diary the date, book accommodation, and register for our district convention: 23 – 25 February at Geraldine – hope to see you there.  In meantime, continue your good work in “Caring For Communities”.
